Housing Renewal

Glasgow, UK
In 2019, I visited Glasgow multiple times, during which I captured this collection of photographs, titled "Housing Renewal". These photos showcase the changes taking place in Glasgow's housing landscape, highlighting the city's rich history of council housing and its recent wave of renewal. Glasgow has the highest percentage of council housing in the UK, making it a fascinating destination for those interested in the history of public housing policies.
Through this photo series, I aimed to illustrate the impact of Glasgow's renewal efforts on the city's urban landscape, which now features a mix of old and new. Many of the older buildings have been demolished, making way for newer developments. Nevertheless, the images also capture the emergence of several new communities that have blossomed in these new-built environments, creating a fresh sense of community in the city.
This collection also highlights the ongoing debate around affordable and sustainable housing, which is an issue facing many cities around the world. The photos reveal the need for a balanced approach to renewal, one that preserves the city's heritage, people's memories, and local communities, while also providing sensible, suitable, and affordable housing for its residents.
